Dark Night of the Soul

I don't think I'll have to sell this to hard. Here's a list of the contributors on this Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse collaboration:

James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils.

The album is called Dark Night of the Soul. I love when the 'guest vocalist' thing is pulled off well and that definitely is the case here. It's not hard to do on tribute albums, but more difficult to do w/original material. Off the top of my head this is right up there w/Unkle's "Psyence Fiction". I need to listen on headphones instead of my crappy computer speakers. After reading the article it's best to listen while it's still streaming and available.

Bonus: Spinner has full, new streaming releases every week. This week they have the new Jason Lytle of Grandaddy amongst others.

  1. Right up my alley. A handful of songs in, and I don't really hear much Danger Mouse. Headphones would probably help though - you're right. The electronic breakdown at the very end of the Frank Black tune is cool.

And is this not ALL the tracks? I don't see the Scott Spillane track - not like he's the main guy from NMH anyhow.

I'm sold. I'd heard of this project, but glad I could actually hear it before buying it. Good call!!

  2. May not go on sale with all the legal troubles. Maybe Spillane plays on some tracks???

  3. Help me out...I have to listen through my computer? Any way to download to my ipod? I'm very rarely alone with a computer.
Also, is there a way we can share music via a closed network? i.e. a napster just for us 3?

  4. @RC: Seems like almost everything free these days is streaming. Uck!! I'm with you on this. I rarely sit at my computer listening to music. I can't think of a way for us to share mp3s. Especially - legally. I'm trying very hard not to steal any music. Hmmm.

@Andy: I honestly wouldn't have recognized the name "Spillane" - my guess is, you're right... he must play some instruments. What's the legal trouble about? Artists from different labels?

  5. I don't know what the specifics of the rancor b/t EMI and Danger Mouse. Maybe it stems from the Grey Album if he was under contract w/them at the time but I doubt it.

  6. I guess the CD has been released. Sort of. It's blank...

Due to "an unexplained legal conflict between [Danger Mouse] and EMI."

  7. Since it's not available for sale, I'd take an "illegal" copy. Anyone find mp3s?

  8. Back in June it was "released" with a blank CD-R. This summer it will be released properly.
