Jay Bennett

In case you didn't know former Wilco sideman Jay Bennett died last weekend. Here's a wrap-up featuring a link to a free download. No cause of death yet as far as i know. Well I love Summerteeth and Bennett had a big hand in that. I know I like Wilco better when Bennett was in the mix than before or after. If you haven't seen the Wilco documentary I recommend it. It's about the trials and tribulations the band went thru while making Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and shows a lot of backstage, let's say, confrontation b/t Jeff Tweedy and Bennett. The doc features a version of Summerteeth's My Darlin' sung by Bennett. It's terrific. You can hear it on Bennett's myspace page.

  1. I heard about it, and was going to post too. Sad. I agree about Wilco with vs without him, and also think that Summerteeth will forever be their masterpiece thanks to him. It's been playing in my car since the news. The documentary has been in my Blockbuster queue, and just moved to the top. Sad ending.

  2. Watched the movie last night with Lisa. Really good for music fans.

Sad to be able to see Bennett and Tweedy splitting before your eyes. Some moments reminded me of making music with my brother. Especially the "over-explaining" part.

My favorite part was when Tweedy was sitting with his young son, trying to guess which of his songs his son was hand-drumming on his lap. He guessed song after song, calling them by lyrics more than their official titles, til his son had to give him a hint that "Drum" was part of the song. He then knew it was "Heavy metal drummer" and sang along to his son's drumming. I have similar "King Everything" moments with my kids.
